Northwest Oklahoma City Residence

When the homeowners of this residence moved in in April of 2001, the landscape was in poor condition. There was a dead tree in the front lawn, and a blank slate in the backyard. The lawn that was originally Bermuda had become mostly weeds due to neglect.

Western Lawns first step was to start the customer on a full service maintenance program consisting of Weekly Lawn Maintenance and Weed Control and Fertilization.

Design Challenges: Western Lawns' professional Landscape Designer had an initial meeting with the homeowner to get the feel for their desires, dreams, and goals. The homeowners desired to be able to enjoy their landscaping through outdoor living spaces that take full advantage of the neighborhood lake views. They wished for both shade and sunny areas in their landscape. In the backyard, they desired a water garden that featured a fishpond, which consisted of a stream that would flow into the lake. Because of the six foot slope from the back porch down to the water, the homeowner felt that some sort of pathway and stairs should be added to help diminish the large slope.

In the front yard, the homeowner felt the most important part was great curb appeal. They realized how important it is to draw the eye towards the front door. The eyesore of the front yard was the side of the neighbor's garage, which the homeowners would like to have screened.

Design Solution: The Western Lawns' Landscape Designer fulfilled the homeowner's dreams!

The Back Yard

Starting near the lakeside, a large flagstone patio was added to create a larger dock area for entertaining. A small fire pit made from dry stacked stone was also added so the homeowners could entertain year round. Addressing the issue of the six foot slope towards the water, a dry stacked stone retaining wall was added that extended the upper level lawn area. The upper and lower landscape areas were connected by means of a flagstone walk and stairs that meandered down to the lower level next to a stream and waterfall. On the upper level, the Landscape Designer took advantage of the great views, and a pergola was installed using round, white columns and rough, stained cedar. Under the pergola, a large flagstone patio connects to the concrete foundation of the home, and extends to the walk that leads to the water. Wisteria was added around the base of two of the columns that adds beautiful, fragrant blossoms in the spring. Next to the pergola is a Koi fishpond that gives the illusion of flowing into the stream, down the waterfall, and recycling to the lake. Groundcovers, perennials, annuals, and Pink Crape Myrtles add color and interest in the landscaping year round. Because the homeowner desired both sun and shade, the Landscape Designer hand chose a beautiful Allee® Lacebark Elm, from a select tree nursery in Athens, Georgia.

The Front Yard

In the front yard, the dead tree was replaced with a 16-18' Chinese Pistache for its great fall color. Blue Point Spiral Cut Junipers were added near the front door to create a sense of welcome and formality. To address the issue of curb appeal, large areas of seasonal color were installed. Two Pink Crape Myrtles were installed, mimicking the formality of the Junipers for summer long color. Little Gem Magnolia, Nellie R. Stevens Holly, and Blue Atlas Cedars were added to screen the eyesore of the neighbor's garage. Azaleas, perennials, and annuals create year round color in the landscape. The front lawn area is overseeded with Rye every fall, for a nearly year round green. To create a festive holiday mood, Christmas Lights are installed before Thanksgiving.
